Junction Redevelopment

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation intends to redevelop the Kutchi Jain Bhavan junction (Jalaram Cross Road) in Paldi ward. This intersection is located on a major arterial road and has become an informal pick-up and drop-off point for private intercity buses. There is also a school at the junction. As a result, the area is often congested and poses safety risks.

The Urban Lab was appointed to prepare the geometric layout and design of the junction with the objective of improving safety for vulnerable users and reducing traffic congestion. Our scope included field surveys to map existing conditions and problems at the site. Through stakeholder discussions, we also documented the requirements and concerns of local residents, the school administration, and parents.

We proposed multiple design options, which were reviewed and finalised through consultations. The final design introduced channelisers, medians, narrowed vehicular lanes, wider footpaths, and a designated school pick-up/drop-off zone. These traffic calming measures helped in organising movement at the intersection, improving pedestrian safety, and reducing congestion.
