TRELLIS - Where Birds and Humans Meet

TRELLIS - Where Birds and Humans Meet

Wayanad

Trellis was developed for a design competition, which focused on creating nature-integrated dwellings that celebrate sustainable living and human-nature harmony. Perched on the edge of Thattekad Bird Sanctuary in Kerala, the tree house offers a quiet retreat for a couple escaping the fast pace of Bengaluru. Surrounded by tea and coffee plantations, the home is built around a grand teak tree and draws inspiration from Kerala’s tribal architecture. Made primarily from bamboo and supported by a natural stone (random rubble) foundation, the structure uses cantilevered log rafters to float above the landscape. One side of the house wraps gently around the tree trunk, following the shape of its canopy, while the other opens out to a small pool—blending nature with everyday comfort.

Each level is a journey of discovery, evoking childhood dreams of tree-top living. The first level houses a cozy kitchen and dining area, perfect for intimate, communal gatherings. The second level is designed for leisure and play, featuring a hot tub that offers a quiet retreat for unwinding. The third level combines a workspace and a restful nook, blending productivity with relaxation.

When monsoon rains touch the forest, the tree house transforms into a symphony of sound and sensation. A bamboo spiral catches rainwater from the roof and guides it through all three levels, ending in a well at the base. This simple yet beautiful system reflects the home's sustainable spirit and deepens its connection to the rhythms of the forest, creating a magical and immersive experience.
