Reclaiming Spaces to Rejuvenating Experiences: Revolution of Public Space
Ahmedabad
Situated in the compact and densely built neighbourhood of Maninagar in Ahmedabad, this project addresses the growing social disconnect witnessed post-Covid-19. Once home to lively streets filled with children, neighbourly conversations, and strong community bonds, the area now grapples with isolation and rising mental health concerns. The project aims to counter this shift by reimagining public spaces as emotional and social catalysts that encourage interaction, joy, and a renewed sense of belonging.
The scope of the project includes three key interventions: the development of safer school zones with traffic calming measures, curb extensions, and wayfinding signages; the activation of community nodes like markets through shading, seating, and public plazas; and the pedestrianisation of streets with vibrant walkways, murals, and inclusive design features. Additionally, defunct residential bungalows are being transformed into cultural hubs such as cafés and exhibition spaces to serve as activity generators for all age groups.
As a result, approximately 1.2 km of street length has been redesigned, with over 80 vendors mapped and integrated into the planning process. The project has enhanced safety, accessibility, and social vibrancy in the neighbourhood while setting a precedent for community-driven urban interventions. Key deliverables include a detailed design toolkit, community engagement visuals, and a framework adaptable by local authorities for long-term urban resilience and inclusivity.
