Jowai Street Rejuvenation

Jowai Street Rejuvenation

Jowai

Commissioned by the Meghalaya Infrastructure Development & Finance Corporation (MIDFC), the Jowai Street and Junction Rejuvenation Project aims to create safer, accessible, and visually appealing streets in the city. It involves design of 3.5 km of streets and 8 key junctions under Packages J1 and J2 in Jowai, Meghalaya. The project envisions context-sensitive design and integrated mobility planning. By addressing local needs and traffic challenges, the initiative seeks to enhance overall urban experience while supporting active and inclusive public life.

The Urban Lab was appointed to provide consultancy services, covering the entire process from baseline surveys to the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPR). Using a people-first and data-driven approach, the team undertook detailed site studies, traffic and pedestrian movement assessments, and multiple stakeholder consultations to shape informed and responsive designs. A tactical urbanism pilot project was also designed to test key interventions on the ground before full-scale implementation.

The project plays a key role in enhancing Jowai’s public realm by improving safety, walkability, and accessibility. Through inclusive design, organized vending, and pedestrian-focused interventions, it intends to create vibrant and people-friendly streets.
