Planning and Design of Road No. 5

Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) is undertaking the redevelopment of Road No. 5, a key arterial corridor connecting the Circuit House to KH-5 Circle, with a total length of 4.50 km. The corridor includes three metro stations, making it a critical link for last-mile connectivity and multimodal integration.

The project aims to transform the corridor into a safe, accessible, and context-sensitive urban street. The design vision emphasizes multimodal integration (MMI), universal accessibility, non-motorized transport (NMT) infrastructure, and compact, safe junctions. It seeks to create a vibrant, green, and inclusive public realm that caters to pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and vehicles alike.

The Urban Lab has been engaged to lead the detailed street design, which includes preparation of road layouts, pavement and junction design, pedestrian pathways with street furniture, integrated landscaping, and the planning of street lighting and utilities. A key focus of the project is the development of comprehensive non-motorized transport (NMT) infrastructure—comprising footpaths, cycle tracks, organized parking, wayfinding systems, street furniture, utilities, landscaping, way finding, and place making elements. The design also incorporates strategies for multi-modal integration at key metro stations along the corridor.
