Advisory Support for Mobility
Dehradun
The Dehradun Urban Mobility Project, led by McKinsey & Company on behalf of the Government of Uttarakhand, aims to address the city’s evolving transportation challenges through an integrated and sustainable approach. With increasing congestion, fragmented public transport, and growing demand for parking, the initiative focuses on improving bus operations, optimizing street space, and enhancing urban mobility across key corridors.
The Urban Lab was engaged as the transport planning expert to deliver targeted interventions across three focus areas: restructuring the city’s public bus network through route rationalization and operational planning; redesigning key traffic intersections using tactical urbanism strategies; and developing a model Parking Area Management Plan (PAMP) for a pilot stretch. These efforts were informed by detailed site assessments, stakeholder consultations, and multi-scalar data analysis.
The Urban Lab’s deliverables included a revised trunk-feeder route network, institutional recommendations for managing public transport operations, tactical proposals for junction redesign, and a parking strategy supported by policy guidance. The project marks a critical step in shaping Dehradun’s mobility future, prioritizing sustainable transport, street efficiency, and user-focused planning in a rapidly urbanizing context.
