Street Design Guidelines for Fort Kochi Mattancharry Area

Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH are jointly implementing the technical cooperation project ‘Integrated Sustainable Urban Transport Systems for Smart Cities (Smart-SUT)’. It includes three cities under the program—Kochi, Coimbatore, and Bhubaneswar. GIZ in consultation with Kochi Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Cochin Smart Mission Ltd. (CSML) identified the ‘Improve Roadways’ program to create ‘seamless connectivity and accessibility’.

As part of the Smart-SUT project, The Urban Lab is developing ‘Street Design Guidelines’ for Fort Kochi Mattancharry area in Kochi, Kerala. The guidelines are based on the concept of shared and active streets providing equitable distribution of space to the road users. It intends to establish a uniform process for street development. The guidelines include street design templates for the different typology of streets and junctions, strategies on placemaking, implementation, and maintenance of streets.
