Transport Masterplan for Temple Town

Badrinath

INI design studio on behalf of the Government of Uttarakhand is developing a masterplan for the temple town of Badrinath, one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand. Due to the large inflow of pilgrims, mobility and accessibility are seen as one of the key intervention areas for the town. During the yatra months of May and June, traffic congestion and parking related issues increase manifold in the town.

The Urban Lab was involved in providing traffic and transport planning inputs for Badrinath Master Plan 2040. The team conducted traffic assessment studies including traffic impact analysis of the temple town. Based on demand assessment and future projections, various alternatives were developed to increase accessibility of the temple. Key proposals include promotion of pedestrianisation near the main temple, development of new road links to decrease congestion, increase in parking sites along the vehicular access points. The proposed road network and circulation plan helps to integrate with the Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) infrastructure.
