Reconnecting Rohtak: Ribbon Park

Mahra Rohtak Play(ce)making Competition 2023 seeks to generate new ideas to reimagine public spaces as a means of improving the quality of lives of citizens with a focus on youth. The competition is part of the Safer Mobility for Youth project organised by World Resources Institute India (WRI India) in collaboration with District Administration of Rohtak, Rohtak Police, and Raahgiri Foundation, along with Fondation Botnar and the Global Road Safety Partnership.

The Urban Lab participated in a design competition with a vision to revive the under-flyover spaces on the Old Bus Stand Road, Rohtak. The proposal envisions to develop a vibrant hub and new urban landmark for Rohtak, through a ribbon element as a linear connector. The concept of a ribbon draws its notional inspiration from the presence of cloth markets in the vicinity and metaphorically symbolises a continuum that connects people with places and narrative. The design development is based on the following strategies:

1.Pedestrian-friendly space
2.Playful and vibrant spaces
3.Safer roads for users
4.Recycled scrap metal
5.Inclusive for all users
6.Modular infrastructure
7.Adaptive Spaces
8.Landmark/ visual identity
